FAQ

Materials & Care

What is stainless steel and what do I have to consider with a stainless steel Spiral Planter?

Stainless steel is a very high quality steel that does not require any special care. When setting it up, take care not to scratch the material.

The surface of our stainless steel Spiral Planter is ground. This gives the material a noble, matt surface and does not reflect as strongly. The Spiral Planter made of stainless steel does not heat up so quickly, as the shiny material reflects the sunlight. The individual parts are delivered foiled to protect the noble surface during transport. Our stainless steel raised bed will give you a lifetime of pleasure.

Stainless steel medium & Large: Material thickness 3 mm, ground, rounded edges

Spiral Planter Mini: Material thickness1.5 mm, ground, rounded edges

Despite careful handling, the smallest scratches due to the production process unfortunately cannot be ruled out. As a rule, these are so inconspicuous that they cannot be detected in the assembled Spiral Planter. Should you notice larger defects, please contact us.

What is construction steel and what do I have to consider with a constrcution steel Spiral Planter?

Like Corten steel, construction steel will also start to rust due to weathering. Construction steel lasts a long time, but in contrast to corten it rusts steadily (rule of thumb 1mm/10 years). To achieve the desired rust look as quickly as possible, pre-treatment with a rust accelerator is recommended. Our 3 mm construction steel variants are sandblasted. This gives the metal a rough surface and the rust patina can form quickly and evenly.Unfortunately, sandblasting is not technically possible with a material thickness of 1.5 mm.

Smallest scratches and stamp marks can unfortunately not always be avoided due to the producton process. However, these are no longer visible after the first signs of rust and do not represent a defect. If we have accidentally delivered a component with major defects, please do not hesitate to contact us.

What is Corten steel and what do I have to consider with a Corten steel Spiral Planter?

Corten steel was invented for shipbuilding, because even in extreme weather conditions, the steel lasts for several decades. The special thing about corten steel: the top layer of rust forms a protective patina so that the steel does not rust through. A nice side effect: Corten is a natural snail deterrent and even keeps slugs away! The typical rusty colour develops with time and weathering. However, you can accelerate the rusting process so that your Spiral Planter develops an even rusty shade after just 7-14 days;
Our 3 mm Corten steel variants are sandblasted. This gives the metal a rough surface and the rust patina can form quickly and evenly.Unfortunately, sandblasting is not technically possible with 1.5 mm material thickness.

Construction & Corten Steel: How does the rust layer develop and how can I accelerate the rusting process?

There are two ways to build up the patina:

1. Use rust accelerator

Special "quick rusters" are available from various dealers. However, we have also had very good experiences with diluted acetic acid (¼ strong vinegar ¾ water).

To do this, set up the Spiral Planter without soil and spray it daily with the solution. After 7-10 days*, the rust patina should have formed. After the acid treatment, the Spiral Planter can be filled with soil and used for planting.

2. Without rust accelerator

In the second variant, time and weather take over the rust process. The kit is built up, filled with soil and planted. Without further intervention, the rust patina forms within 8-12 months* due to the weather-related alternation of moisture and dryness.

TIP Spiral Planter Mini: Wash the Spiral Planter e.g. in the dishwasher to remove grease residues and accelerate the rusting process!
*= The duration, colouring and speed of the rusting process depends on the weather and the exhibition location.

Order

The product I want to order is not available. Why?

Don't worry. This is only a short-term supply bottleneck.
We only produce as much as we are sure we can sell. It can happen that the warehouse is empty sooner than the new Spiral Planters are produced. Usually this bottleneck is solved after a few days to max. 2 weeks.

Miscellaneous

What should I consider when setting up the raised bed?

Each Spiral Planter comes with detailed assembly instruction.

The ground on which the Spiral Planter is to be placed must be level and firm so that the Planter does not sink in.
Building & corten steel forms rust, which can stain natural stone and patio tiles.
For optimal plant growth: Position the Planter as freely as possible so that all sides can be exposed.

How do I plant the Spiral Planter?

In general, the upper planter shelves are drier than the lower ones. Accordingly, you can place Mediterranean plants at the top and moisture-loving plants at the bottom. A plant with a lot of foliage should be planted either on the highest level, or in the lowest shelves, so that it does not steal the light from the lower plants. Also pay attention to sunny or shady sides: Lettuce, for example, needs quite a lot of light, while kohlrabi can cope with a little less. To make use of the small corners, you can either sow them with flowers or herbs, or plant them with houseleeks (Sempervivum) or sedum species

Is there an irrigation system for the Spiral Planter?

An irrigation system for the Spiral Planter is in conception, but not yet ready for the market. If you are interested, please write to us. We will then inform you as soon as we publish new products.

A tip: Alternatively, you can also irrigate automatically with a drip hose and timer.
